Proposed Research-focused Departments of the University of Luna Project
A list of just some of the considerable variety of things needing attention

COLLEGE OF SCIENCE

Selenology Department (Lunar geology)

  • Robotic exploration homework: We need to fly lunar orbiter missions with the instruments capable of filling in the many blank spots in our map of lunar resource and other features of economic significance - the "Economic Geography of the Moon"
  • Data Mining Projects: Some of this knowledge might be mined from data of missions already flown, using special software.
  • Transportation Corridors: Such a map would also identify logical regional and interregional transportation corridors, as well as areas where most of the needed resources are concentrated, thus telling us where a first resource-using industrial settlement should be located
  • Ground Truth lander and rover missions are indicated to quantify and qualify teasing indications from orbital probes, for example, of suspected lunar polar ice deposits and of suspected lavatubes
  • Feature and Place Name Registry
  • Identification and prioritization of areas for Geological, Scenic, Historical Preservation Reserve status

Astronomy Department

  • Farside radio astronomy installations
  • Optical astronomy installations
  • Designing telescopes for Lunar amateur use

COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING & APPLIED SCIENCE

Energy Department

  • He3 extraction, handling, shipping
  • Lunar Solar Power Systems
  • Power Storage Options ongoing research
  • Dayspan/Nightspan Operations management
  • Recycling as a way to reuse embodied energy already produced
  • Energy efficiency research
  • Structured industrial parks in which waste heat from one operation feeds the next down a line of decreasing thermal needs
  • Developing lunar sourceable liquid and gaseous fuels for generators and mobile applications
  • Mass driver systems for export bulk commodities
  • Mass catcher systems for import bulk commodities

Civil Engineering

  • Road construction
  • bridge, tunnels, shafts

COLLEGE OF LIBERAL ARTS

Department of Human Resources

  • Identification of production-supporting roles for seniors, children, adolescents, and the handicapped
  • Identification of tasks that can be outsourced to teleoperators on Earth in order to free a larger percentage of the population on the Moon for export and domestic production needs.
  • identification of tasks that can be assigned to those who must be removed from the general population, so that they can also support the economic goals of the frontier population. Note: on a frontier there is always more to be done than people to do it. We cannot afford to support the existence of those not contributing in some way.

Sports & Recreation Department

  • computer simulation development of sports designed to play to lunar 1/6 th gravity and traction, but with standard momentum
  • Ditto re dance forms
  • Development of out-vac (external surface vacuum) recreation and sporting activities

Arts Department

  • Assistance with developing lunar performing arts forms

Frontier Political Science Department

  • Determination of the minimum needs for domestic home rule
  • Developing agreed upon schedule for increasing levels of autonomy
  • Earth Political, Economic, Cultural, Relations

COLLEGE OF EDUCATION

Department of Curricula Development

  • Developing open-source research-focused curricula for use in colleges and universities around the world, in support of ULP Research goals

COLLEGE OF MEDICINE

Department of Frontier Medicine & Health

  • Development of compact full-function hospitals
  • Development of Moon-appropriate first aid kits and systems
  • Research in Earth-orbiting facilities with 1/6th normal artificial gravity to gain early indication of physiological and other health problems that are 1/6th gravity specific
